Jane Long has been practising reflexology since 2003 and now has her own successful business, Calm Therapy in Eastbourne, East Sussex. This wonderful seaside town is where Jane grew up although she did spend 23 years in London prior to returning in 2014. She has 2 children, Dylan 12 and Mia who is 10 and home is shared with 2 gorgeous female guinea pigs, Lemon and Peanut. In London she worked in retail before moving into the music industry. At one point she was working, training to be a reflexologist as well as trying for a baby. This was certainly a stressful time and she found that reflexology was a treatment that helped her relax and unwind. She didn’t see the music business as a long-term career and made the decision that she wanted her own reflexology business and you could say, the rest is history!

Writing and Blogging was delighted to be invited to interview “the boss” to find out more about the differences between her two pregnancies and the impact that reflexology had.

During your first pregnancy, you had reflexology – can you tell us more?

Basically, I had reflexology throughout my first pregnancy, which I found very supportive and calming. Initially the sessions were every 2 weeks and then weekly, the closer it came to my due date. However I did experience a lot of discomfort, as I had a big baby weighing in at 9½ pounds. I also had morning sickness and found that the reflexology had a really calming effect; it did seem to sedate those hormone surges, which made me nauseous. Towards the end of the pregnancy, my hips ached a lot due to the pressure of the big baby I was carrying, but again the aches subsided after a reflexology treatment. Dylan arrived bang on his due date without any “priming for labour” techniques.

However, you chose not to have reflexology during your second pregnancy. Was there any particular reason for that?

It was really due to a lack of support. I fell pregnant forthe second time really quickly and with the problems I had had conceiving Dylan, I wasn’t expecting that. I was now pregnant again, was working and also had a 1 year old with little help with childcare. There really was little time for me!

So, no reflexology, what was the outcome?

Consequently, without the reflexology, I had a very uncomfortable, unsettled time throughout my whole pregnancy. My sickness continued for 5 months, which was extremely exhausting.The pregnancy was also very uncomfortable. My baby wriggled endlessly and the pressure on my digestive system and lower regions made me very miserable.

You were told to expect a big baby?

Towards the end of my second pregnancy, I was told by the midwives to expect a big baby as they thought that my baby was 7½ pounds at 36 weeks. This filled me with dread and bought back memories of the birth of my first child. As I said, Dylan was 9½ pounds and he arrived on his due date and I listened with a sense of dread as the midwives suggested that I would have a 10lb baby!

What did you do?

Due to my discomfort and desire not to deliver a huge baby, I decided that after I passed 37 weeks, I would apply the “Priming for labour” techniques to myself seeing as I am trained in Maternity Reflexology. So I sat on the couch and on and off over two or three days I worked specific reflex points and sure enough I went into labour at 37 weeks and 5 days.

How did this make you feel?

After delivering Mia I was overjoyed and relieved not to be pregnant any more. This was only because I had been so uncomfortable throughout my pregnancy.

Were there any negatives?

The real negative was that my baby did not look very happy at all when she arrived. She looked very red for the first few days and slept nearly all the time for the first couple of weeks after birth. Also for the first year of her life she never ever smiled! I can really describe her as a “grumpy” baby. Looking back on this experience, I may have been more than ready to deliver my baby, but my baby wasn’t ready to come into the world, even though she was very big in size.

With hindsight, what would you have done differently?

Yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing! What I should have done is have regular reflexology sessions throughout my second pregnancy to support and relax me and to keep me calm through my various uncomfortable times. Consequently, I may have been more comfortable towards the end of the pregnancy and been able to wait a little longer before feeling the need to deliver. I also think I would have had a clearer mind and have been able to make better decisions.

Why do you think it’s important to tell your story?

I do tell my personal story to my clients who are pregnant, as I hope it will make them think twice about what they are asking for. I try to make them aware that even though reflexology can be a powerful treatment during pregnancy, it is always best to wait for the right time for your baby to arrive. Even if it seems the right time for mum, baby may not be ready and sometimes, as long as your care team are happy, it may be the right thing to let your pregnancy go over 40 weeks.

Also I can vouch from personal experience the supportive benefits you gain from receiving reflexology throughout pregnancy. My 2 pregnancies really highlight this. If you are suffering with nausea, backache or SPD like I was, weekly treatments will support you until you feel better and more balanced. If you are having a glowing pregnancy, it’s not necessaryto come every week, but just as and when it fits into your life style. I would recommend 4 – 6 weekly sessions as you approach your due date. This is a wonderful way to bond with your baby and prepare you for birth.

How Reflexology Helps People Experiencing Stress and Anxiety

I am treating more and more clients for stress and anxiety in my Reflexology clinic.

Many have been signed off work to try and recover.  Some are on medication and others are not.  Some have emotionally “cut them selves off”. They cannot say how they feel.  The best way some of my clients can describe how they feel is “vacant”, “empty” or “numb”.

So what happens when you book into visit to Calm Therapy Reflexology? 

Firstly, I talk with my clients and ask a few general health questions.  By listening to them I can get a better understanding of where their energy is blocked or stagnated and needs releasing.  The body is reflected on a Reflexology map and is based on the foot along 10 longitudinal lines. So I can then give a treatment specific to their needs.

When the Reflexology session begins, I make sure they are comfortably lying on their back on the treatment couch.  If someone is highly stressed, I can encourage them to be more aware of their breathing.  I then start the Reflexology with ALOT of relaxation techniques and then continue to give an hour long session.  During this hour, all my client can do is lie there and receive the treatment.  This is a massive part of the therapy.  People who are highly stressed are not used to giving themselves time out and receiving.  They are usually the ones giving away all their reserves and energy, whether it be at work or home life.  They may even have experienced a recent trauma.   Reflexology releases a lot of stress and tension during the session and I notice a real positive difference in my clients demeanour as they come to the end of their hour.

“Reflexologists are trained to help balance the mind and body and to maintain this state of homeostasis the body needs to run smoothly. When there is a malfunction in the body it is thrown off balance. Reflexology helps to sustain a natural equilibrium in every gland, organ, muscle, tissue and cell in the body through stimulation of pressure points, called reflexes on the hands and feet.”

People who live with stress and anxiety experience a lot of tension in the upper part of their body, head, neck shoulders and digestive areas.  So this is why Reflexology is so good for this condition.  Treating the feet is encouraging their energy to flow more freely all around their body.  Touching the feet helps them to feel grounded.  I have previously posted links to my Calm Therapy Eastbourne Facebook page about the importance of Grounding, walking bare foot and getting in touch with nature.  Getting out in the country and trips to the coast will definitely help those with stress and anxiety.

It will take more than one Reflexology session to feel that sense of balance and wellbeing, but thats what its all about.  These symptoms relating to stress and anxiety are there to slow you down.  It’s your body telling you that it’s time for a change or to start doing things in a different way. International Women’s Day! Eunice Ingham; The Mother Of Reflexology

To Celebrate International Women’s Day I Thought I Would Introduce To You
Eunice Ingham, affectionately known as The Mother Of Reflexology.

Eunice Ingham was born in South Dakota in 1889 and went on to work as a physiotherapist for Dr Joe Shelby Riley. Dr Riley was very interested in some work that a colleague, Dr Fitzgerald has published on the subject of zone therapy. Eunice Ingham took time to research and develop the zone therapy findings and developed her foot theory in the early 1930’s.

Eunice spent many hours probing the feet, finding tender spots and equating them to the anatomy of the body. She then began working on people’s feet, using her thumb and fingers to push and prod. She became so convinced with the benefits of this treatment that she planned to write a book and travel throughout the USA to talk about health seminars.

Eunice’s life-long goal was to help mankind as much as we are able, whenever possible and wherever we might be.

In 1938, Eunice published her first book “Stories the feet can tell” which very quickly spread the word about the benefits of Reflexology. Eunice became very well known and travelled the world attending health seminars where she spoke with medical practitioners about her therapy. In latter years she was joined by her nephew, Dwight Byers.

Eventually, Dwight took over the teaching seminars and established the International Institute of Reflexology, to protect Eunice’s original writings, worldwide.

In December 1974, Eunice passed over at the age of 85 years. She had dedicated her life to helping others and was totally committed to the benefits of Reflexology.

Toothpaste! I Made My Own!!!

These are exciting times!  I have always wanted to make my own beauty products and yesterday I made a start, if you can count toothpaste as beauty…?!  I would say it is more oral health.  It is not only the health benefits of making my own toothpaste that attract me but that just polished sensation your teeth have after using the mixture.  It is fantastic.

Holistic “Home Maid”

Anyone close to me knows how much I loathe domestic chores.  All that dust, grease and grime that seems to shift from one end of a surface to another.  Even with the ‘latest’ cleaning product I never seem to have much luck with a ‘gleaming mirror’ or a ‘surface I could eat off’….

So imagine my delight when, at the majestic age of 42 I stumbled across the delights of lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda!
Now that spring has almost sprung and the sun light is shining through my bathroom window, I could no longer ignore the heavily water drop stained shower screen.  I tried with various shop bought products to remove these unsightly stains but with no joy.

So I turned to our trusty YouTube and found the link below explaining what natural products I need and how to use them.   And guess what….it worked and really well.  Now I have had this success, I plan to encorporate these more into my domestic cleaning routine in the future.

Method:
Squeeze lemon juice onto a sponge and then sponge down shower screen.
Mix one part vinegar with 3 parts baking soda to make a paste.
Smear some of the paste onto the shower screen and leave for up to an hour.
Mix half water with half vinegar in a spray bottle and then spray the shower screen.
Squeegy the excess liquid away and wipe dry with kitchen towel.

Do you know what……it works !!!
